No event in Irish history was as tragic as the Great Famine.
There had been famines in Ireland before 1845 which had killed thousands
of people in certain parts of the country.but none lasted as long or had as great affect on the country as the "Great Famine".
After the Famine Ended.
By 1851 the famine had come to an end, other than a few areas around Dublin. During the years of the famine the population fell from 8,175,124 to 6,552,385.
But not everyone had felt the grief that the poorer families had felt, as the preface to the Irish Census of 1851 makes clear:
We feel it will be gratifying to your Excellency to find that the population has been diminished in so remarkable manner by famine, disease and emigration between 1841 and 1851, and has been decreasing, the results of the Irish census of 1851 are, on the whole, satisfactory, demonstrating as they do the general advancement of the country.
